Eleven migrants drown heading from Turkey to Greek island: media
At least 11 migrants believed to be Syrians drowned as two boats sank after leaving southwest Turkey for the Greek island of Kos, Turkey's Dogan news agency reported on Wednesday. Separately, a boat carrying six Syrians sank after leaving Akyarlar on the same route. Tens of thousands of Syrians fleeing the conflict in their homeland have descended on Turkey's Aegean coast this summer to board boats to Greece, their gateway to the European Union.
Support for Merkel's conservatives edges down on refugee crisis - poll
The Forsa poll put Merkel's conservative bloc down one percentage point on 40 percent after a 2-point dip last week, which the pollster blamed on divisions within her party on the third bailout for Greece. The Social Democrats (SPD), who share power with Merkel, were up one point at 24 percent. "Angela Merkel cannot yet score on the dominant issue of refugees because she feels under pressure and it doesn't suit her pragmatic and calm political style," said Forsa chief Manfred Guellner.
Brazil convicts Odebrecht Group for slavery-like practices in Angola
A Brazilian labor court convicted units of Brazil's Odebrecht Group of holding workers in conditions akin to slavery at an ethanol refinery construction project in Angola, Brazilian prosecutors said in a statement on Tuesday. Judge Carlos Alberto Frigieri of the 2nd Part of the Labor Court of Araraquara, Brazil, ordered Odebrecht to pay 50 million reais ($13 million) in damages. The ruling comes as Odebrecht's chief executive, Marcelo Odebrecht, is in jail as part of a giant corruption probe in Brazil.
